General Information

Our master's program is taught in the branches of Biotechnology, Botany, General Biology, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Hydrobiology, Basic and Industrial Microbiology, and Zoology. Every year, in the beginning of the fall and spring semesters, the quotas announced by the Department of Biology are awarded to graduate students in accordance with the admission and registration requirements determined by the Graduate School of Natural and Aplied Sciences.

Program Profile

The aim of the thesis graduate program carried out in Giresun University Biology Department is; to develop the ability of scientific research related to branches of biology and sub sciences and to increase the knowledge accumulation, gain access to information, evaluation and interpretation skills. In addition to these, graduate thesis studies are carried out successfully in the research laboratories of the department with the consultancy of our academic members who have sufficient knowledge and skill.

Admission and Registration Terms

The students in our graduate program is taken by oral exam. The number of students to be admitted to graduate programs and the qualifications to be searched for candidate students are announced before the beginning of each semester. In this announcement, the application conditions and deadline, the place and date of candidates' oral examinations are pronounced. Candidates must have a bachelor's degree and at least 55 standard points on ALES exam administered by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) or the relevant score type which is equivalent to 55 ALES points on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). The degree of undergraduate diplomas taken abroad must be approved by the Higher Education Council (YÖK). Candidates should bring the necessary documents including; a score from the YDS exam if they have received one or a foreign language exam accepted by the Universities Council (ÜAK), the graduation diplomas, the achievement grades from the courses that have been taken in the undergraduate level and the certified documents indicating the graduation grade averages to the Graduate School Administartion, so they can make their application. While a general success grade of a candidate is calculated; 50% of ALES score is used. The overall grade point average must be at least 60.

 

Rules on Recognition of Prior Learning

A successful student who has completed at least one semester in the same institute in the same university or in a graduate program linked to the equivalent institute of another higher education institution may be admitted to the post graduate programs by horizontal transfer. In order for a student to be admitted as a transferee, he must have at least 75/100 of the weighted average of the courses he / she has enrolled by the date of application and must comply with the graduate curriculum in which he / she is currently attending and entrance conditions. The student who wants to transfer to a graduate program of the university horizontally; apply to the relevant institute administration at least three weeks prior to the start of the following semester, adding documents indicating an introduction to the prior curriculum and documents indicating the success of the courses from which it was enrolled. This application is examined in the Executive Board of the Institute and it is decided if that the student is eligible for horizontal transfer before the start date of the semester. If a student is enrolled in a postgraduate program at a different university, then a minimum number of courses to be enrolled in a graduate program at a college is determined by the recommendation of the advisor and the related Board of Directors and the approval of the Graduate School Board.

Qualification Requirements and Rules

The graduate courses of Giresun University Biology Department can also be taken from the relevant department or a different department by considering the recommendation of the advisor. Students may take courses that are determined by the decision of the board of directors and approved by the Institute for opening that semester. Master's program consists of at least 120 ECTS including at least eight courses including seminar lessons, lessons of specialization and thesis studies, provided that it is not less than 60 ECTS in one academic year. Seminar course, specialization course and thesis work are evaluated as successful (B) or unsuccessful (K).
A credited courses’ success letter grade is appreciated by the instructor who teaches the course. During the transformation of the success letter grade to the achievement score, below chart is used:

A student in a thesis graduate program must write the results of thesis research related to the dissertation according to the writing rules of the relevant institute and defend his / her thesis orally in front of the jury. After the completion of the thesis examination, the jury decides acceptance, rejection or correction of the thesis with absolute majority. A student who has been given a decision to amend a thesis must submit his / her thesis again in front of the same jury at the latest within three months and if successful he / she has to publish his thesis.

 

Access to Further Studies


Graduates who have successfully completed the graduate program of the Biology Department of Giresun University can apply for doctorate programs in their own fields or in multidisciplinary fields in case of providing that they obtain a valid score from the ALES examination and that they have sufficient English language proficiency.


Examinations, Assessment and Grading


In the graduate program of Giresun University Biology Department, it is necessary to attend the lectures taken by the students and to pass the midterm and final exams to be made by the faculty member. The success grade of a master's course is the sum of 40% of the midterm grade average and 60% of the final or final exam grade. This note must be at least CC in order for the student to be considered successful. The seminar course and thesis work are non-credit and evaluated as successful or unsuccessful. The student who completes the master thesis study is entitled to take the thesis examination. The master thesis exam consists of presentation of the thesis work and the following question and answer section. After the completion of the thesis examination, the jury decides acceptance, rejection or correction with absolute majority. A student who is successful in the thesis examination is entitled to obtain a master's degree.

Graduation Requirements


The candidate who will graduate from the graduate program of the Department of Biology of Giresun University should have completed at least eight courses, one seminar and dissertation study, not less than 120 ECTS credits. A student in a thesis graduate program must write the results of thesis related to the dissertation according to the writing rules of the related institute and defend his / her thesis orally in front of the jury. After the completion of the thesis examination, the jury decides acceptance, rejection or correction of the thesis with absolute majority. A student who has been given a decision to amend a thesis must submit his / her thesis again in front of the same jury at the latest within three months and if successful he / she has to suppress his thesis.


Employment Profiles of Accomplishments


Graduates of this Master program can work in the laboratories, food industry, schools of the Ministry of National Education, private schools, pharmaceutical market, research institutes, organizations within the Ministry of Health and Social Assistance, medical and agricultural medicine industry, national parks, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and they perform many different tasks such as  biologist, teacher, technical staff, research and development (R & D), production, quality control, quality assurance and sales marketing.
