General Information
Our Ph.D. program is taught in major branches of Biotechnology, Botany, General Biology, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Hydrobiology, Basic and Industrial Microbiology, and Zoology. Every year, in the fall and spring semesters, the quotas announced by the Department of Biology are taken to PhD students in accordance with the admission and registration requirements determined by the Graduate School of natural and Applied Sciences.

Program Profile
The aim of the Ph.D. program of Giresun University, Biology Department is; to develop the ability of scientific research related to branches of biology and sub-science, to increase the knowledge accumulation, to gain access to information, to evaluate and to interpret. Numerous doctoral courses are taught in various branches of science in our department. In addition to these, doctoral studies are carried out successfully in consultancy of faculty members who have sufficient knowledge and skill in the research laboratories of the department.

 

Acceptance and Registration Terms
Students, who hold a Bachelor's or Master's Degree and fulfill the foreign language requirement, can apply our Doctorate program in fall and spring semesters. The number of students to be admitted to the doctorate program and the qualifications to be searched for candidate students are announced before the beginning of each semester. In this announcement, application conditions and deadline are specified. Candidates applications will be taken into consideration as they have a Masters Degree Diploma, a minimum of 55 points from the ALES exam or at least 55 ALES points in the examinations equivalent to the ALES accpeted by the Universities Board (ÜAK). In admission of students to our doctoral program; A score equal to at least 55 points from foreign language exam (YDS) or a score equivalent to 55 of YDS from a foreign language examination accepted by Council of Universities (ÜAK) are needed.For foreign students, a score of at least 55 points for YDS from one of the English, French and German languages ​​other than the native language, or equivalent  point from another foreign language exam accepted by to the Council of Universities is compulsory.

 

Rules on Recognition of Prior Learning
Issues related to Which graduate programs can be transferred, and applied for, are determined by the proposal of the relevant department and the approval of the board of directors of the institute. Applications made for horizontal transfer are accepted by the institute board of directors upon the positive opinion of the presidency of the relevant department. A student who has successfully completed at least one semester in another post-graduate program of another higher education institution may be admitted to the post-graduate programs by way of a quota determined by the institute board of directors. For a transfer application, (b The student must have the conditions that the university has foreseen for the acceptance of the postgraduate education (b The student must not have passed the thesis phase in the program for which he / she is enrolled in graduate programs, and he / she should not have taken the qualification examination for doctoral programs. (c)The student need to be successful in courses of at least 50% of the total credits that was foreseen in his/her previous program.

 

Qualification Requirements and Rules
The doctorate program for graduate students who applied with an awarded masters degree, consists of a total of 240 ECTS credits including a minimum of 60 ECTS credits of courses of nine courses and seminer courses and also specialization courses, thesis proposal and thesis study. For the students who are accepted with an undergraduate degree; the doctorate program consists of Eighteen courses including at least 120 ECTS seminar courses and specialization courses consist of a total of 300 ECTS credits including doctorate qualification period, thesis proposal and thesis study. The seminar course and thesis work are non-credit and evaluated as successful (B) or unsuccessful (K). Biology Department Ph.D. students will be able to take the courses with names, code, content and credits from other branches of education with the recommendation of their consultant.
Students admitted by the graduate degree must take the doctorate qualification exam at the latest until the end of the seventh semester at the latest and the student accepted at the undergraduate level at the latest. If the student who does not take the qualification examination does not have an acceptable excuse from the board of directors, his / her work with the current advisor will be terminated. Counseling is transferred to the head of the department concerned. In the case of student request, a new advisor is appointed with the decision of the presidency of the relevant department and the relevant institute board of directors.
A student in a thesis graduate program must write the results of thesis research related to the dissertation according to the writing rules of the relevant institute and defend his / her thesis orally in front of the jury. After the completion of the thesis examination, the jury decides acceptance, rejection or correction of the thesis with absolute majority. A student who has been given a decision to amend a thesis must do so within six months at the latest, defend his thesis in front of the same jury, and if successful he must publish the thesis.

 

Access to Further Studies
Giresun University Graduates who have successfully completed the Ph.D. program in Biology can apply for an academic position, post-doctoral study (post-doctoral research) or specialist positions in research institutions in public institutions in higher education institutions in Turkey or abroad in the same or similar fields.


Examinations, Assessment and Grading
Giresun University Department of Biology PhD program requires students to attend the lectures and to pass the midterm and final exams made by the faculty members. The success grade of a doctorate course is the sum of 40% of the midterm grade average and 60% of the final or final exam grade. This note must be at least CB in order for the student to be considered successful. The student who completes his PhD dissertation is taken to the thesis examination. The doctoral dissertation exam consists of submission of the thesis study followed by the question and answer section. After the completion of the thesis examination, the jury decides acceptance, rejection or correction with absolute majority of the dissertation. A successful student is entitled to a doctoral degree.

After the completion of the thesis examination, the jury decides acceptance, rejection or correction of the thesis with absolute majority. Employment Profiles of Accomplishments Graduates of the PhD program could use their skills and find opportunities in the following places ; In the laboratories, pharmaceutical market, food industry, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Ministry of Environment and similar institutions; In the organizations of the Ministry of National Education, in the private schools, in the courses, in the research institutes, in the establishments within the Ministry of Health and Social Assistance, in the fields of Biology, as Teacher, Technical Staff, Research and Development (R & D), Production, Quality Control, Quality Assurance and Sales. They can take part in a wide range of jobs, such as in the agricultural industry, national parks.
